Artist Statement

People these days rely so heavily on their sight, they tend to forget the importance of sound. As someone who is passionate about visual and sound art, I use both to explore my heritage.

I am a German born American citizen with Ethiopian and Ukrainian roots.  Visual art has been a powerful tool for me to investigate my relationship with my heritage. I use photography, ceramics, and drawings to process my own cultural identity.

Growing up with multiple languages in the house, my fascination with the sound of conversation was being nurtured. This is directly related to my sonic pieces, where I investigate the rhythms and tones found in voices.

I find it most powerful to combine my interests in visual and sound art. This exploration started with drawings. I allow the sounds and rhythms of music to drive my hand movements. I visually render what I see in my head when I listen to music. The sonic relationship with visual media extends beyond drawing as I also look at how photography is influenced by sound.

I invite people to join my exploration of heritage and music.
